As effective Scouting is critically dependent on the quality of the adult leaders, we need to get the right people into the right roles and support their continuing effectiveness. The Scout Association is seeking to reinforce its appointment process in advance of the impending Independent Safeguarding Authority vetting and barring arrangements.

The Appointments Advisory sub-Committee is tasked with offering a positive welcoming interview and with confirming candidates’ suitability. This can be delivered far better if candidates have been provided with the information outlined above.
As the line manager, the GSL had the lead role in ensuring that this happens. In putting a volunteer forward for an appointment, a GSL is recommending them for the proposed role in their Group. It follows that GSLs will want to be confident that their volunteers are both suitable and ‘fit and proper’ for their proposed roles.
Well prepared new adult volunteers will demonstrate the strengths that they bring to Scouting, enjoy their Scouting and are more likely to stay with Scouting.

Appointments turnaround times can be further improved if GSLs can ensure the ‘right first time’ completion of the AA and the CRB forms before they are forwarded to the District Appointments Secretary and can encourage new adult volunteers take up the offered interview appointments with alacrity.
